Big Data Management
Before the introduction of Big Data, companies used to rely on Flat Files and/or Databases to collect, store, and organise data. However with the introduction of systems such as Hadoop and MapReduce, data management has evolved into a new dimension! Concepts that used to be a breakthrough in technology with classical database engines, now are steadily becoming obsolete.
For different reasons, we have chosen to do Hadoop, and we assist our clients to achieve their potentials by understanding their data and its impact by equipping them with the proper infrastructure and tools to derive analytical patterns that would support their decision-making.
The rhetoric question poses itself: Is Big Data for everyone?
It is not easy to answer such open ended question, however with the explosion of data in our information ecosystem, especially unstructured data, and the need for feasible solutions to manage such data in a practical way, and the availability of different technologies, revolving around Big Data such as Hadoop, MapReduce, InMemDB and others, the short answer would be a resounding YES!

Our tests and benchmarking team conducts several tests on different software/hardware configurations in order to provide help and support to our clients, here you can find the latest Benchmarks and or tests results.
The latest tests revealed that Oracle Linux 7 is the fastest Linux Distro in the market, and here is why:
Our tests and benchmarking team conducted a series of tests to find out which Linux Distro is the fastest, and whether there are certain Distros that are already orientated towards specific applications without any optimisation or intervention.
Setting up the test environment:
Our team used affordable HP Proliant Rack servers to conduct the tests with the following configuration:
2 x XEON X5472 3.0 GHz CPU
32 GB Fully buffered ECC RAM
4 x 160GB 7200RPM WD SATA Drives configured as RAID 0 volume
Matrox built in video controller
LSI RAID controller
Installed the latest releases of the following Distros:
Fedora 20, Kernel 3.15
Oracle Linux 7, Kernel Unbreakable 3.08
CENTOS 7, Kernel 3.10
UBUNTU 14 LTS, Kernel 3.13
SUSE 11 SP3, Kernel 3.01
RHEL 7, Kernel 3.10
*All trademarks are copyright of their respective owners.
The systems were updated to the latest OS releases and kernel patches, without any fine tuning or optimisations, however the server Governor was set to “Performance” in all tests.
The composed test used the following subset of Phoronix Test Suite (Open Source Test Suite) on every machine/OS:
John the Ripper
Timed Apache Compilation
Timed Kernel Compilation
Formulating an Index:
In order to be able to compare the results, we used Fedora 20 to be the baseline, therefore every result produced under Fedora 20, would end up having an index value of 1.0, then we added these results and multiplied by 1000. Hence the index for 12 tests under Fedora 20 would be 12 x 1000 = 12,000.
For the other Distros’ results we divided the values by the corresponding Fedora 20 result, summed up the entries and multiplied by 1,000 in order to produce test scores.
The Test Scores:
According to the above results, Oracle Linux 7 and CENTOS 7 are the fastest Distros, they had almost equal overall test scores, however OL7 performed better in SciMark and PostMark thus scoring a bit better than CENTOS 7.
The detailed test results could be downloaded by clicking this link, they are also published on http://openbenchmarking.org
Not all Linux Distros are created equal!
From the above benchmark few conclusions could be made, well it is true that Oracle Linux 7 proved to be scalable and the fastest, but also CENTOS has produced comparable results, especially for Memory intensive tasks and Java computations, therefore for mission critical computing these 2 Distros probably are the best options, especially when you want to support huge database transactions.
SUSE 11 SP3 and UBUNTU 14 LTS outperformed all the other Distros in Apache benchmark, therefore if you wish to run a webserver SUSE 11 SP3 is the best Distro to be used, however we wouldn’t recommend SUSE for transactional environments, that leaves you with UBUNTU if you want a mix of transactional and webserving performance.
Red Hat 7 showed comparable performance to Oracle Linux and CENTOS, knowing that these Distros are Forks from RHEL, however it seems that certain optimisations Oracle has implemented at the Kernel level which renders OL7 the fastest Distro.
Fedora 20 is really a very versatile Distro, we use it on our Laptops, because of its huge support for a variety of hardware, and its repository compilations. But of course for a production business environment Fedora 20 cannot really compete.
Now you have an idea about how the latest releases of Linux Distros are comparing. Hope the above would help you to make an informed decision.
Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
